health and safety law changes in April

It's That Time of Year

April brings changes to the tax system each year in the UK.  This gets lots of coverage as it affects the amount of tax people and companies pay.  Tax is always something that grabs the attention of the news so it's not surprising that the weekend has covered lots of stories about changes to allowances.

One thing that may not be as well covered is the changes to health and safety law that come into force under the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Repeals, Revocations and Amendments) Regulations 2013 on April 6th.

The changes this year include changes to the celluloid and cinematograph film act 1922, construction (head protection) regulations (1989) and the Gasholders (Record of Examinations) order 1938.

In practice, the changes are designed to make things simpler by bringing the legislation under the current goal setting legislation.  Not a lot changes in fact, helmets are still required on construction sites as they prevent injuries.  Cellulose nitrate film is still more hazardous than more modern film and so needs careful handling.

The hazards remain, only the legislation changes.

It's good to have a look at the legislation that has been changed.  It is an insight into how health and safety management and enforcement has developed over the years.
